What To Do In A Pet Emergency

The emergency care process will be easier both for you and your pet if you know what to expect from your experience at our veterinary center. Here are the steps you should follow in an emergency situation:

STEP 1
Call Ahead If You Can

We know that in emergency situations, you may not always be able to call ahead to let us know that you are on your way, but it's always better if you can. If you do have the time, you may also want to complete our New Patient Form before you arrive.

STEP 2
Get To Our Office Right Away

A member of our team will show you to your pet's exam room. If you haven't already done so, you will be asked to complete our New Patient Form. One of our veterinary technicians will triage your pet and then a veterinarian will perform a comprehensive exam.

STEP 3
Determine Treatment

After assessing your pet, our emergency veterinarians will create a treatment plan to ensure that your pet gets the care they need. We will make sure to keep your primary care veterinarian updated with your pet's medical history throughout the process to help integrate their emergency and routine healthcare as much as possible in the future.

Animal Emergency FAQs

Emergency vet care involves the treatment of animals in situations that require immediate medical attention, or could potentially be life-threatening.

  • What is considered an emergency?

Any of these situations could be considered to be emergencies and will require immediate care for a veterinarian. If your pet has had an accident or is experiencing any symptoms below, bring them into our emergency veterinary center as soon as you can.

    • Unconsciousness
    • Injuries to the eye(s)
    • Obvious signs of extreme anxiety or pain
    • Choking, difficulty breathing or continuous coughing/gagging
    • Bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum, or blood in the urine
    • Bleeding that hasn't stopped, or severe bleeding
    • Pain associated with passing feces or urinating, or inability to pass feces or urinate
    • Staggering and/or seizures
    • Heatstroke or heat stress
    • You know or suspect your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc.)
    • Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
    • Severe vomiting or diarrhea; more than two episodes in 24-hours
    • Severe lameness, fractured bones or inability to remove legs
  • What emergency services do you offer?

At our emergency vet clinic, we offer state-of-the-art emergency care for your four-legged family members. We are equipped to provide specialized veterinary diagnostics, a complete range of surgical services, and hospitalization.

  • Do I need to call ahead?

If you can, it's always best to call us ahead of your arrival, but we understand emergency situations can develop very quickly and that this is not always possible.

If your pet's situation doesn't allow you the time to call us in advance, don't hesitate to bring your pet into our veterinary center for immediate medical attention anyway.

It always is best to call us ahead if you can, but we understand that in emergency situations that's not always possible.

  • When is your emergency clinic open?

We are open 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

  • How long will we have to wait to see the vet?

The way a veterinary emergency center functions is quite similar to a human hospital's emergency department—the pace of patients can be unpredictable and you may have to wait.

Since we can't predict what cases we will see and when they will arrive, we will prioritize cases based on your pet's unique needs.

You'll find a comfortable area for waiting, and we will do our best to keep you updated about wait times and the status of your pet.

  • Will you keep in touch with our primary care veterinarian?

Yes, we will keep your primary care veterinarian updated with your pet's medical history and files to ensure your pet receives seamless, integrated care.
